Stability Analysis for the Immersed Fiber Problem

چکیده
A linear stability analysis is performed on a two-dimensional version of the \immersed ber problem", formulated by C. Peskin to model the ow of uid in the presence of a mesh of moving, elastic bers. The purpose of the analysis is to isolate the modes in the solution which are associated with the ber, and thereby determine the eeect of the presence of a ber on the uid. The results are used not only to make conclusions about the stability of the problem, but also to suggest guidelines for developing numerical methods for ows with immersed bers.

A Moving Grid Method for the Immersed Fibre Problem
A linear stability analysis is performed on the Immersed Fibre Problem, which models the motion of elastic bres immersed in an incom-pressible uid. The results are used to gain insight into the physical problem, and also to help in designing an eecient, moving grid numerical scheme. Computations are performed for a two-dimensional model problem and the second-order convergence of the scheme is ...
متن کاملParametric Resonance in Immersed Elastic Boundaries
In this paper, we investigate the stability of a fluid-structure interaction problem in which a flexible elastic membrane immersed in a fluid is excited via periodic variations in the elastic stiffness parameter. This model can be viewed as a prototype for active biological tissues such as the basilar membrane in the inner ear, or heart muscle fibers immersed in blood. Problems such as this, in...
متن کاملRemoving the Stiffness of Elastic Force from the Immersed Boundary Method for the 2D Stokes Equations
The Immersed Boundary method has evolved into one of the most useful computational methods in studying fluid structure interaction. On the other hand, the Immersed Boundary method is also known to suffer from a severe timestep stability restriction when using an explicit time discretization. In this paper, we propose several efficient semiimplicit schemes to remove this stiffness from the Immer...
متن کاملThe Finite Element Immersed Boundary Method: Model, Stability, and Numerical Results
Abstract. The Immersed Boundary Method (IBM) has been designed by Peskin for the modeling and the numerical approximation of fluid-structure interaction problems. Recently, a finite element version of the IBM as been developed, which offers interesting features for both the analysis of the problem under consideration and the robustness and flexibility of the numerical scheme. In this paper we s...
متن کاملModeling a semi-flexible filament in cellular Stokes flow using regularized Stokeslets
Many physical and biological systems involve inextensible fibers immersed in a fluid; examples include cilia, polymer suspensions, and actin filament transport. In such systems, the dynamics of the immersed fibers may play a significant role in the observed macroscale fluid dynamics. In this study, we simulate the dynamics of an approximately inextensible semi-flexible fiber immersed in a two-d...
